Chernobyl Children

Posted on : 18-11-2013 | By : Allan | In : News

Our RC president Allan Garrick presented a donation of £250 to the Friends of Chernobyl Children when the children were here for a month in September.

Eighteen seven to nine year olds came from Belarus where they live in extreme poverty and suffer medical disabilities associated with continuing exposure to radiation. They were accompanied by a teacher and interpreter and did a certain amount of schoolwork and also got taken to local events and attractions. They were also given medical checks, vitamins and food of a quality they are unable to get at home and the objective is to bolster their health for the coming winter which will be very severe in Belarus. Their attendance at local attractions and events was all sponsored by local individuals.

The work now begins to raise funds to cover the cost of bringing them back next year as the intention is that they come for four successive years in all. Our donation is a start towards this and was gratefully received.
